The Resin has a completely different set of medicinal compounds that the essential oil doesn't contain. Boswellic acids are only present in the resin portion, not their essential oils unless in trace amounts. Frankincense Essential Oils do not contain boswellic acids, as so many essential oil companies would lead us to believe.
